Ekō-in (回向院), also known as Honjo Ekō-in, is a Pure Land Buddhist temple in Ryōgoku, Tokyo in the Sumida ward, right in the city’s bustling heart. The historic temple was constructed in 1657 to commemorate the 100,000 people killed in the Great Fire of Meireki which destroyed 60-70% of the city of Edo (Tokyo). The Temple School is family-owned and is a sister school of the Chiba prefecture Buddhist temple school. Since 2005, PiA Fellows have taught a variety of English classes to young children between ages 2-11 and their mothers. They also lead after school activities at this family-oriented school.
